Limited Release Project Q&A

We’ve been getting quite a few questions about our Limited Release Project recently. Here is a quick overview of what we are doing and why we are doing it Q&A style.

What is the Limited Release Project?

Once every couple of months Honeybee will release a limited run of an exceptionally unique or high quality coffee. These coffees may have experimental processing methods, come from origins outside the norm, have interesting stories attached to them, or simply be uncommonly good.

Why have you started this project?

Honeybee is committed to serving our customers high quality coffee always. This project allows us to push even further beyond this standard and showcase some of coffee’s remarkable and sometimes weird potential. Supporting riskier or more expensive growing techniques also encourages farmers to push the limits of what coffee can taste like, rewarding all of us in the process. The limited releases also offer our team an opportunity to learn more about coffee and pass that information along to our customers. The production team enjoys getting to experiment with new and interesting coffees and is excited to share that experience through this project.

We also hope that this project helps change the way people view coffee as a product, shifting the perception away from commodity and towards an experience.

Why do you only release a handful of bags?

The coffees that we source for this project are often much more expensive than our normal lineup. This limits how much we can purchase at one time. Also, many of the coffees we consider are exclusively available in smaller quantities from importers. Limited Release 003 (stay tuned) is one of these coffees. A colleague bought it at a coffee auction, and we were given an opportunity to buy 11 pounds total. We are also aware that there is only so much market space available for the fringes of what coffee is capable of. We want these coffees to be available to the people that are interested but understand that they’re not for everyone.

Where can I buy the Limited Releases?

Moving forward, we will open pre-orders on our website to reserve the upcoming release. The pre-order will be available to all, but people subscribed to our mailing list will be notified first, giving them a better chance at securing their order. All of our Limited Releases will be available online, and any remaining bags will go on shelves at our cafés.

Can I try the coffees before purchasing a bag?

Some of our limited releases will be available as pourovers at our cafés. If that’s the case it will be announced when the coffee is released. Anyone is welcome to order a pourover of the limited release while supplies last, meaning you don’t have to purchase a bag to order it by the cup.
